The night before

Friday 19 May, 6:30 pm — welcome dinner at 22 Bowen's, on Bowen's Wharf in Newport. It's a two-minute walk from both hotels, right on the water, and it will run late enough that you can arrive off an evening flight and still make it.

Everyone invited to the wedding is invited to Friday — but it's a seated dinner, so we do need to know. Tick the box when RSVPs open, or email us before then.

What to wear

Dress code Coastal formal. Long dresses, suits or a jacket and tie. Colour is very welcome — the palette outside is pale blue, sage, butter and navy, if you'd like to borrow from it.
Shoes The ceremony is on the club lawn, reached by a short gravel path from the gate. Block heels, flats or wedges will serve you far better than stilettos. Grass + gravel
Weather Mid-May in Rhode Island is beautiful and cold once the sun drops. Expect around 63°F in the afternoon and 54°F by dinner, with wind straight up the West Passage. 63° / 54°F
Bring A wrap, a shawl or a good coat. There are heaters on the deck but they only do so much against a southwesterly off the bay. One layer

Good to know

Parking Parking at the club is limited. Use the public lot at East Ferry on Conanicus Avenue and walk up Bay View Drive — about five minutes — or take the shuttle from Newport and leave the car at your hotel. East Ferry lot
Accessibility The lawn is level but it is grass, and there are stairs inside the club. We'll have a matted path from the drop-off, reserved seating near the front, and someone to help. Tell us what you need on your RSVP and we'll sort it out in advance. Step-free
Food A shellfish-forward menu with a full vegetarian option, and we can cover most allergies with notice. You'll choose on your RSVP. Veg option
Rain The ceremony moves inside the club and starts at the same time. We'll text everyone who's RSVP'd by noon that day if we make the call. Indoors, 4:30

Getting to Narragansett Bay

Travel & stay

Jamestown sits in the middle of the bay, on Route 138 between the two bridges. Providence is forty minutes away, Boston is an hour and a half, and the train from New York stops fifteen minutes from the island.

Getting here

Times to Jamestown

PVD Rhode Island T.F. Green, Warwick. Small, easy and closest by a wide margin. This is what most people should book. 40 min · 28 mi
BOS Boston Logan. Many more flights and usually cheaper, at the cost of a straightforward hour and a half down I-95. 1 hr 40 · 75 mi
Amtrak Kingston station. Northeast Regional and some Acela trains stop here — about three hours from Penn Station. Taxis meet the train, but book a car if you can. 20 min · 15 mi
NYC airports JFK, LGA and EWR. Only worth it if the fares are dramatic. The train is more pleasant and takes about the same time door to door. 3 hr 30 · 185 mi

Book a rental car before March. Newport's season opens in May and cars, rooms and restaurant tables all go at once.

Where to stay

Blocks held until 20 March 2028

Room block · Newport The Wayfinder The easy choice — relaxed, a good pool and bar, ten minutes over the bridge to Jamestown and a short walk from Friday's dinner. First stop on the shuttle. Code BT2028 · from $255
Room block · Newport Hotel Viking Grander and older, at the top of Bellevue Avenue and walkable down to Bowen's Wharf. Second stop on the shuttle. Code NOLAN-FERRANTE · from $310
Nearby Gurney's Newport Out on Goat Island with water on every side and a spa. The best option if you're bringing children or staying the week. No block · book direct
On the island Jamestown rentals Jamestown has almost no hotel rooms but plenty of houses along Conanicus and Walcott. Ideal for a group, and you can walk to the club. Book by January

Getting around

Shuttle Free, leaving the Wayfinder and Hotel Viking from 3:45 pm, with returns from the club every half hour between 9:30 and 11:30. No booking — just be at the door. 3:45 pm →
Bridges The Newport Bridge is tolled eastbound into Newport — use E-ZPass or you'll be billed by plate. The Verrazzano Bridge, coming from the mainland side, is free. E-ZPass
Traffic Route 138 is the only way across, and it slows badly on a Saturday afternoon in season. Add twenty minutes to whatever your phone tells you. +20 min
Ferry The Jamestown–Newport ferry runs from May and takes about twenty minutes across the East Passage. Lovely in daylight, but it stops well before the reception ends. Daytime only
Rideshare Uber and Lyft are reliable in Newport and thin out on Jamestown after about ten. Don't plan your night around one. Thin late

If you're making a weekend of it

An hour Beavertail State Park The lighthouse at the southern tip of Jamestown, on bare rock with the whole of Rhode Island Sound in front of it. It's the light drawn at the bottom of our chart.
Half a day The Cliff Walk Three and a half miles along Newport's ocean edge with the mansions on one side and the Atlantic on the other. The southern half gets rocky — wear real shoes.
Two hours The Breakers The largest of the Newport mansions and the one to pick if you're only doing one. Buy tickets ahead; the queue in May is real.
Anytime Eat Simpatico and Jamestown Fish on the island, Matunuck Oyster Bar if you'll drive for it, Flo's Clam Shack for fried clams standing up, and a Del's on the way home.

Gifts

Registry

Your being there is the whole point, and getting to Rhode Island is not a small thing to ask. If you'd still like to give something, these are the three places we've set up.

Three lists

Each opens in a new tab

A few notes

Shipping Please send gifts to the address on the registry rather than bringing them to the wedding — we're flying home and can't carry much. Ship, don't carry
Instead of a gift If you'd rather give elsewhere, the Conanicut Island Land Trust looks after the fields and shoreline of Jamestown, including a good deal of what you'll be looking at from the lawn. Optional
Truly There is no expectation here. Come to Rhode Island, dance badly, stay late.

Questions

Answers, plainly

If yours isn't here, email us at hello@brigidandtoby.com — we read everything.

01Can I bring someone?

If your invitation names a guest, yes, absolutely. If it doesn't, we've hit the limit of what the club holds and we're sorry. You'll know plenty of people there and we'll make sure of it.

02Are children invited?

Children in your immediate family are, and they'll be named on the invitation. Beyond that we're keeping it to adults so the room stays a manageable size.

We'll share a list of sitters used by families in Newport and Jamestown with anyone who asks — email us and we'll send it along.

03What does "coastal formal" actually mean?

Cocktail attire that can survive a grass field and a sea breeze. Long dresses, suits, a jacket and tie. No black tie, no jeans.

The practical part matters more than the formal part: block heels rather than stilettos, and a layer you can put on when the temperature drops after the ceremony.

04How cold is it going to be?

Around 63°F in the afternoon and 54°F by dinner, with wind coming up the West Passage. Mid-May in Rhode Island is genuinely lovely and genuinely cold once the sun goes down at 8:03.

05What happens if it rains?

The ceremony moves inside the club and starts at 4:30 either way. Nothing else changes.

We'll text everyone who has RSVP'd by noon that day if we make the call, so make sure we have a mobile number for you.

06Do I need a car?

For getting to Rhode Island and around Newport, it helps a lot. Jamestown itself is small enough to walk if you're staying at East Ferry.

For the wedding day, no. The shuttle runs from both hotels from 3:45 pm and back every half hour from 9:30 until 11:30.

07Where should I park?

The public lot at East Ferry on Conanicus Avenue, then a five-minute walk up Bay View Drive. Parking at the club itself is limited and we're keeping it for the shuttle and for anyone who needs a short walk.

If you're driving over the Newport Bridge, you'll want E-ZPass or you'll be billed by plate.

08I have a dietary restriction.

Tell us on your RSVP. The menu leans on shellfish with a full vegetarian option, and the kitchen can handle gluten-free, dairy-free and most allergies with notice.

09Can I take photos during the ceremony?

Please don't — the ceremony is unplugged, and it's thirty minutes. Everything after that is fair game, and we'd love what you take.

We'll post a link here for shared photos in the weeks after.

10When do I need to reply by?

15 April 2028. RSVPs open on this site in January, once invitations have gone out.

11Can I come Friday, or stay through Sunday?

Yes to both. The welcome dinner is at 22 Bowen's on Bowen's Wharf at 6:30 pm on Friday the 19th, open to everyone invited to the wedding — just let us know you're coming so we can size the table.

There's no organised brunch on Sunday, but a lot of us will be at Slice of Heaven in Jamestown somewhere around ten.
